Santander Arena Ignites: A Concert Review of Lamb Of God and Mastodons Explosive Performance

As the sun set on a hot but rainy August evening in Reading, Pennsylvania, the air buzzed with anticipation for an event that promised to be nothing short of electrifying. The Ashes Of Leviathan Tour, celebrating the 20th anniversary of two iconic albums – Lamb Of God’s “Ashes Of The Wake” and Mastodon’s “Leviathan” – had arrived at the Santander Arena. Fans from far and wide gathered, eager to
witness an evening that would blend ferocity, artistry, and sheer rock ‘n’ roll
spectacle. The lineup – headlined by two of metal’s most influential bands alongside the incredible Kerry King as the supporting act – set the stage for an unforgettable night.

The energy in the arena was palpable as the lights dimmed and the crowd erupted in cheers. People of all ages, some adorned in vintage band t-shirts and others wearing newly purchased merchandise, united in their love for heavy music. The atmosphere was electric, promising an experience that would fuse nostalgia with modern
intensity. From the moment the first chord echoed through the arena, it was clear that fans were in for something special.

The concert experience was enriched by the inclusion of Kerry King, of Slayer fame, as the supporting act. Known for his iconic riffs and unmatched prowess as a guitarist, King’s presence brought an additional layer of excitement to the evening.
As his band took the stage before the main acts, they delivered a set filled with ferocity and technical skill that set the tone for what was to follow. Kerry enlisted some of the heaviest names in metal for his new band – vocalist Mark Osegueda (Death Angel), guitarist Phil Demmell (Machinehead, Vio-lence), Kyle Sanders on bass (Hellyeah), and Slayer drummer Paul Bostaph – and they’re taking the show on the road in support of KFK’s solo debut release, From Hell I Rise, released in May. King‘s solo work and standout Slayer hits came alive, and the moment he struck the opening riff to “Raining Blood,” the crowd went absolutely berserk. The synergy between the band and the audience was electric, as fans erupted into cheers and applauded King’s legendary status in the metal community. By the time he closed out
his set, it was clear that his performance had added to the night in a meaningful way. Kerry King not only complemented the headliners but also carved out his own space in the evening’s excitement, leaving the arena buzzing with high spirits.

Mastodon took to the stage, and the energy in the Santander Arena shifted in an entirely different direction. Known for their unique sound, which fuses progressive metal with sludge rock, Mastodon’s set was a masterclass in musical complexity and artistic depth. Their performance opened with “Blood and Thunder,” creating an
enchanting atmosphere that captivated the audience from the very first note.

As they transitioned into “Megalodon,” the audience would come alive once more, but in a different way – swaying and nodding their heads to the intricate rhythms and harmonies that Mastodon is renowned for. The band’s musicianship was impressive; Brann Dailor’s drumming was both technical and powerful, combining speed with
melody. The interplay between Troy Sanders and Brent Hinds offered a rich variety of vocal harmonies, showcasing their ability to shift from guttural growls to ethereal melodies seamlessly. Though their sound differed from that of Lamb Of God, Mastodon brought their own brand of energy that held the audience in rapt attention, proving that diversity in music can create an engaging concert experience.

As Lamb Of God took the stage, the arena immediately transformed into a cyclone of energy. The opening notes of “Laid to Rest” reverberated through the venue, igniting a mosh pit that encapsulated the unrestrained spirit of metal music. Randy Blythe’s
commanding presence was magnetic as he led the band through a blistering set, seamlessly melding tracks from their classic album “Ashes Of The Wake” with newer material. The music was intense, and every note felt like a celebration of the band’s
storied career.

Blythe’s voice, steeped in energy and explosiveness, soared over the driving riffs delivered by Mark Morton and Willie Adler. The musicianship was tight, and the synergy among the band members was palpable, creating a palpable thrill. Perhaps one of the standout moments of the set came with “Now You’ve Got Something to Die For,” during which the crowd sang along in unison, adding to the sense of
community that is often the hallmark of concert experiences.

But it wasn’t just about the music; the visual elements further amplified the
performance. Pyrotechnics erupted at strategic moments, illuminating the stage with bursts of flames that danced in rhythm with the music. This not only served to heighten the sensory experience but also created an atmosphere filled with anticipation and excitement. Crowd surfing was rampant, turning the floor into a
chaotic yet exhilarating scene, with fans hoisted above their peers, embodying the quintessential spirit of metal concerts.

The Ashes Of Leviathan Tour brought together some of metal’s most revered acts for an experience that transcended mere entertainment. Each band’s performance contributed to a cohesive narrative that celebrated the journey of heavy music, from the thrilling aggression of Lamb Of God to the artistic complexity of Mastodon. The
inclusion of Kerry King added a nostalgic layer for long-time fans, ensuring the evening was a comprehensive homage to the genre.

As the last notes faded and the lights came on, attendees left the Santander Arena with a profound sense of joy and camaraderie. This concert was not just a collection of performances; it represented a moment in time where fans could come together to enjoy the raw power and emotional depth that metal music provides. For anyone
who had the opportunity to witness this night, it will undoubtedly remain etched in memory – a testament to the strength and vibrancy of the heavy music community.
